Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory Announces Expansion of IV Solutions Manufacturing Capacity in North America, Advancing Supply Stability and Development of DEHP-Free IV Containers
Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory, Inc. (Head Office: Naruto, Tokushima, Japan; President and Representative Director: Shuichi Takagi; "Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory") today announced that Otsuka ICU Medical LLC ("OIM"), a joint venture in the IV solutions business in the United States, headquartered in Austin, Texas, and chaired by Shuichi Takagi, will expand its IV solutions manufacturing capacity in North America by constructing a new facility and upgrading existing operations at its manufacturing site in Austin, Texas.
Under this plan, more than USD 500 million will be invested to construct a new approximately 500,000-square-foot facility at OIM's existing Austin manufacturing site, while also upgrading existing facilities. Through this initiative, OIM aims to enhance the long-term supply stability of IV solutions in North America and advance product development, including initiatives related to DEHP-free IV containers*.
In the North American IV solutions market, the importance of a stable supply system has been increasing against the backdrop of supply chain impacts caused by natural disasters, infrastructure constraints and other factors. Healthcare institutions are also responding to changes in the regulatory environment, including the transition to DEHP-free IV containers. This manufacturing capacity expansion is intended to respond to these changes in the market environment, enhance the supply stability of IV solutions in North America, and strengthen the product lineup.
This plan is one of the major initiatives to strengthen the North American IV solutions business of OIM, a joint venture established in May 2025 by ICU Medical, Inc. and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory America, Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory. Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory will support OIM's efforts to strengthen its development and supply system for IV solutions for the North American market by leveraging its expertise in IV container development and manufacturing quality.
Under its management vision, "The Best Partner in Clinical Nutrition Worldwide," Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory will continue working to ensure the stable supply of products and create value in the field of clinical nutrition, thereby contributing to the health of people around the world.
Guided by its corporate philosophy, "Otsuka-people creating new products for better health worldwide," the Otsuka Group will continue to contribute to the health of people around the world.
- * DEHP: Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. DEHP is a type of plasticizer used to soften resins such as polyvinyl chloride. In medical devices, there is a possibility that DEHP may leach out through contact with drug solutions and other liquids. From the perspectives of reducing patient exposure and responding to regulatory requirements, the transition to alternative products that do not use DEHP is progressing. "DEHP-free" means that DEHP is not used.
