Aiming to contribute to local communities

Coastal clean-up activities

As part of environmental clean-up activities, at each business site, we voluntarily carry out regular clean-ups around our facilities, using time before work and on days off.

At the Matsushige Factory, every year before the beach season opens, we participate in the Clean the Sea campaign (beach clean-up activities) organized by the Matsushige Industrial Complex. In June 2024, 260 people (including 62 from the Matsushige Factory) participated and collected approximately 80 kg of trash.

In addition, the volunteer group Otsuka Pharmaceutical Environmental Club, comprising Otsuka Group employees, supports activities such as Ocean Garbage Zero Week*1 and, together with local community associations, carries out activities such as cleaning our founding site, Naruto (Chidorigahama Beach).

The number of employees participating with their children has been increasing year by year, and it is also a good opportunity to learn about the importance of the environment together with the children.

  1. Ocean Garbage Zero Week: A joint initiative by the Ministry of the Environment and The Nippon Foundation that promotes simultaneous clean-up activities under the slogan Zero Marine Debris from May 30 (Zero Garbage Day) to June 8 (World Oceans Day).

Since 2010, we have maintained a partnership agreement for the Tokushima Collaborative Forest-Creation Project*2 based on Tokushima Prefecture's Global Warming Countermeasures Promotion Ordinance. This program implements a model carbon offset*3 mechanism and conducts forest maintenance, such as thinning and tree planting, using donations from participating businesses and individuals. Beginning from 2021, the program was revamped from the traditional partnership-agreement model to a Forest-Creation Declaration model, under which companies and organizations take the lead in issuing an SDGs Forest Creation Declaration and, with Tokushima Prefecture and the Tokushima Forest Creation Promotion Organization as partners, conduct forest stewardship. In July 2024, we issued an SDGs Forest Creation Declaration and received a Forest Creation Partner Certificate from the Governor of Tokushima Prefecture.

In 2019, as an expansion of this initiative, ten Otsuka Group companies in Tokushima Prefecture signed an agreement for the FAB Tokushima Forest Creation Project*4. Over the five years from 2019, as the Anabukigawa FAB (Forest Activity Base), we operated in the upper Anabuki River area (Koyadaira, Mima City), undertaking forest-creation activities as a host corporate group that provides focused support for forest maintenance, and improved approximately 150 hectares of forest. At the tree-planting event held in December 2023, Expanding the Circle of Collaboration through Forest Creation in Mima FAB 2023, 110 people participated (85 of whom were from the Otsuka Group). From 2024 onward, we will continue forest maintenance as Mima FAB Second Stage.

  1. Tokushima Collaborative Forest Creation Project: A program in which companies and organizations, Tokushima Prefecture, and the Public Interest Incorporated Association Tokushima Forest Creation Promotion Organization collaborate on forest creation.
  2. Carbon offset: The concept of first making efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO₂ as much as possible, and for greenhouse gases that are nonetheless emitted, offsetting them by investing in reduction activities commensurate with the amount emitted.
  3. FAB Tokushima Forest Creation Project: As a new development of the Tokushima Collaborative Forest Creation Project, Tokushima Prefecture, the Public Interest Incorporated Association Tokushima Forest Creation Promotion Organization, and companies conclude agreements, establish activity bases (Forest Activity Bases) in large contiguous forest areas of 100 to 300 hectares, and engage in concentrated forest-creation efforts.
